Representation practice
BIG LITTLE LIES
introduction
In this American black comedy drama the big picture idea being represented is age and gender where the people being represented is a young woman and her older mother in law. Using the 4 technical elements i will show the contrast between the two and how the mother in law is portrayed as a typical judgy, passive aggressive and rejecting, and the audience might take David gauntlett's identity theory of how media influences self-identity and self-understanding and agree mother in laws are like that. well the young woman is shown as put together well dressed and polite. This clip captures the uncomfortable nature of the older woman and how she's not afraid to speak her mind even if its hurtful, awkwardly putting the younger woman in a stiff position which the audience can feel. Using Stuart Hall's theory the audience will either completely reject this stereo type, negotiate because it's funny or agree because of their own view.

In this clip she's wearing headphones which blocks out noise and people around her but also conveying how she feels inside disconnected, alone, we see a group of popular girls and David gauntlett's theory could show that this is how we as a audience understand school girls. Then we get the main girl getting bullied stereo typical representation of high school which some people may watch and instead of taking the dominant reading reject this idea completely using Stuart halls reception theory. All groups hanging out with people like them like the basketballers are together the popular girls are together and nerds are talking to each other there's no mix. The song is talking about swapping places with someone and she looks numb unemotional she might be grieving and dealing with a loss of someone she loved whos dead she would swap places with them.
